Understanding ADHD: Treatment and Diagnosis has been produced under a grant from National Institutes of Mental Health.

Successful in Field Trials

In field trials of the video and guide, conducted in pediatric practices with parents, the materials were found to be effective in conveying information and increasing parent confidence in playing their role in the diagnostic process. The materials were also found to be engaging, interesting, and of very high quality.

Upcoming Segments Available Soon

Upcoming segments in the Understanding ADHD series go further into the content, providing easy-to-follow examples and responses to frequently asked questions for the many areas introduced in the Diagnosis and Treatment segment. These "In-Depth" segments include:

  • ADHD In-Depth: What characteristics do different children diagnosed with ADHD exhibit (including a series of 5 diverse case studies of children diagnosed and treated for ADHD)? When is ADHD ADHD and when might it not be? Are their relationships between ADHD and other disorders?

  • Diagnosis In-Depth: What is a rating scale? How do I recognize the behaviors? How can I work more effectively with my child's school? What does a physical exam for ADHD look like and what is the doctor looking for? What are they key components of an ADHD Diagnostic Interview and how can I better prepare for it?

  • Treatment In-Depth: What are educational interventions and accommodations? What is the process for implementing them? How can I work with my child's teacher to ensure success? What do I do if I encounter roadblocks? What are some of the medical/pharmaceutical interventions in detail and what successes and problems might I expect from them? How do psychologists and behaviorists fit into the picture?

CD-ROM Available Soon

In addition, an interactive CD-ROM with an active website tied to it will soon be available. This CD-ROM will provide many of these components along with activities and support tools to help parents work more effectively with their health care providers and schools.
